Triple Treat Thursday
My new shoes arrived yesterday. After much research and debating, I chose the Brooks Glycerin 7 shoe. It's a neutral shoe with a lot of cushioning. Great for supinators like me. Today I tried it out for my typical lunch time two lapper. Right away I noticed a difference in how my feet responded. I could tell there was no resistance with rolling inward like with my older shoes. The cushioning was great on my heels too. For once, it didn't hurt to walk to Subway after my run.
Numero Dos.
Running at high noon on a day with predicted highs in the mid 80's after having a day with digestive issues is not the best way to get your run in. Unfortunately, I don't always follow what is logical. That's why today I found myself outside, sweating buckets, and hankerin' for a big glass of water. Good thing I only do short distances at lunch time. While my feet were feeling good (see Numero Uno), the rest of my body was hot, sweaty, and not into it. That's why my time sucked. I ran the 1.54 miles in 16:12. with my first mile being at 10:43 Not as good as my time earlier this week, but still a big improvement from when I started!
Numero Tres.
I was talking with Jen about this while we waited for the 5K to start a few weeks ago. Why is it all the running clothing is in bold colors? I've always been an outdoors man and love to wear olive greens and other "Earth" tones. Yet, I can not find athletic clothing in these colors. Today, I ran in a white Adidas shirt with dark blue stripes down the sleeves, matching shorts, white socks, and my new grey/black/gold running shoes, then I had my Texas A&M Entomology hat with a lighter blue brim and light tan body.
Back to the 5K race, I told Jen that I wanted to find all earth tones and be "That Guy" that wears outdoorsman colors to all my races. Now I just need to know where to find them!

Easter Three Miler
So this evening, we got home, and I was still exhausted. We all laid down and I fell asleep until about 7:30. I really did not feel like running but knew I needed to get out there. I didn't run yesterday, and only hiked on Friday, remember? I laced up my functionally inappropriate shoes (see below) and grabbed my reflective vest as it was almost dark.
Last night I mapped out several new 3 mile-ish out and back routes. I tend to run better when I have a defined turn around and know I'm half way done, and just have to get back. So I picked on and off I went. At the turn around it was 17:00 flat. I thought "I can do better than that! Lets go!!!" so on the way back I picked up the pace and made it back in 32:58. I pretty substantial negative split! Not great but getting closer to my goal.
Now on to my shoes. I've been doing a lot of research online about running shoes, my shoe form (supination) and it's negative effects. I've learned a lot about my feet and many of my feet troubles are directly linked to being a supinator, for example: weak ankles, sore heels, bone spurs at the back of the heel. and high arches. In conjunction with this, the shoe I have is made for stability to help with people that over-pronate. Ummmm.... yeah, that would basically be the opposite of how my feet are now. Things could have been differently 5 years ago. After working on my feet for 5 years, and having gout, the mechanics could have changed.
SO..... Tonight I'm ordering a new pair of shoes that I've decided should be good for my feet. If not, they have a good return policy. Plus, I'm getting them for about half what you'd pay in a store for the same model!
In other news, my secret plan to turn Jen into an ultra-marathoner is underway. On Saturday, we stopped by Road Runners, and she got her feet tested. This morning she ordered herself a pair of shoes, and this evening has been researching the Couch to 5K training.
All in due time....... Heh heh heh!!!

3 Mile Hike
Yesterday I took a 3 mile hike at Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area. It’s a nice hiking area because it’s not too hilly, the paths are pretty decent, and there’s never an abundance of people. For my birthday, I got a new macro lens for my camera and wanted to try it out. The hike went well, and about halfway through it, I broke out the macro and got a few shots in. Overall, the hike was easy, and fairly slow paced. Mostly I was enjoying being outside in the nice weather. Below are a few shots I took with the new lens, and a few of the hiking area.
Today, I elected to take a rest day. Tomorrow, I plan a “long” run. Probably about 3-4 miles.

Three Things Thursday
1. Today is Connor's 2nd Birthday! For those of you that don't know him, Connor is a very happy little boy, and by "little" I mean he is very small for his age. Connor's favorite things in the world are Mickey Mouse, trains, hats, and shoes. He's always smiling, and loves to play and explore new things.
2. I signed up for the Army 10 Miler. Yeah, I know, I posted about this already, but I wanted to add to it. When I first started this blog, I mentioned that I've always wanted to run a marathon, and this latest adventure into running was going to lead up to me running the Baltimore Marathon. Since that time, I've decided that it might be too lofty of a goal at this point. I considered running a half, but when I saw this one, I knew it would be the one.
It takes place in DC, and I've become very familiar with DC after spending nearly a year working a service route in DC. I enjoy being around The Mall area, and the scenery would be great. Plus, I work for The Army.
I still have a full marathon as a goal, just not for 2010. We'll see how the rest of this year plays out.
3. Running shoes. I've been researching a new pair of running shoes, and let me tell you, it's not going well. I've been told by a running shoe store that my current shoe is good for my feet. Reading up on this, it appears that is not true. I have very high arches, I am a supinator (sounds like I should go to jail for something doesn't it?), and have prior medical issues, so it's not an easy choice. Besides, after spending the $55 for the Army 10 Miler, and about to spend another $55 for our Family Fitness Run at the end of the month, I really don't feel like spending $100 for a pair of shoes.
I'll keep ya informed!
